What is Professional Supervision?

Professional supervision is a structured process where an experienced professional provides guidance, support, and feedback. The purpose of professional supervision is to improve the quality of work and to ensure that ethical and professional standards are upheld.

It is an effective way to address the challenges of working in the helping professions including the significant emotional impact on practitioners as they work with individuals, whānau, and communities who are experiencing emotional distress, trauma and social injustice. This takes a toll on practitioners’ well-being and can affect both personal and professional lives.

Professional Supervision involves regular meetings where a practitioner can discuss their work, reflect on their practice, receive feedback, and develop new skills and knowledge. It is required in fields such as social work and counselling, and is increasingly being taken up by other professions such as lawyers, teachers, and healthcare professionals.

Professional Supervision is a useful addition to any professional’s ongoing development and mental well-being.
